Empowering Inmates through Skills and Entrepreneurship: AJAHF Foundation’s Rehabilitation Initiative

At AJAHF Foundation, we believe that empowering incarcerated individuals with vocational skills and entrepreneurship training is key to breaking the cycle of crime and poverty. Our Skill Acquisition & Entrepreneurship Trainings in Prisons program is designed to equip indigent and vulnerable inmates at Nigeria’s correctional centres with practical skills that enhance their employability and economic independence post-release.

AJAHF facilitates skill acquisition trainings to enable prisoners acquire new skills that would serve as their means of livelihood and minimise their susceptibility to crimes when released from prison into the society. As much as possible, AJAHF will also facilitate discharged inmates who acquired skills to gain employment or start a trade in the area of the skills they acquired during incarceration by provision of necessary equipment, tools, start up capital and above all business mentorship to enable them successfully set up small businesses.


Our Focus Areas

Through this initiative, we aim to:

  • Provide Practical Vocational Training – Teach inmates relevant trade skills that match labor market demands.

  • Enhance Economic Opportunities – Equip participants with entrepreneurial knowledge to start their own businesses upon reintegration.

  • Reduce Recidivism and Crime Rates – Offer constructive alternatives that prevent former inmates from re-offending.

  • Foster Personal Development and Rehabilitation – Help inmates regain confidence, discipline, and responsibility through structured training.

  • Promote Collaboration with Employers and Investors – Link trained inmates with potential employers and business funding opportunities.


Key Training Programs

  1. Vocational Skills Training – Includes tailoring, carpentry, welding, shoemaking, soap making, hairdressing, and more.

  2. Entrepreneurship and Business Development – Covers business planning, financial management, and market strategies.

  3. ICT and Digital Skills – Introduces inmates to basic computing, digital literacy, and e-commerce opportunities.

  4. Agricultural and Farming Skills – Focuses on modern farming techniques, poultry farming, and agribusiness.

  5. Handicrafts and Creative Arts – Teaches inmates how to create and market handmade crafts and artworks.

  6. Soft Skills Development – Includes personal finance management, leadership skills, and workplace ethics.


Our Achievements

  • Trained and empowered hundreds of inmates with valuable vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

  • Established partnerships with vocational training centers, business mentors, and government agencies.

  • Provided certifications and starter kits to facilitate post-release economic opportunities.
